19. Vienna Shorts

We’ve come a long, long way together

After an online-only edition in 2020 and a hybrid edition in 2021, VIENNA SHORTS returned to its regular cinemas Gartenbaukino, Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus, Österreichisches Filmmuseum and METRO Kinokulturhaus for six days in May 2022. The 19th festival edition was themed We’ve Come A Long Long Way Together and was dedicated to film history and analog cinema.

Out of a total of 356 films in the program, 94 films from 34 countries were screened in competition; the competition films were available both in theaters and online. In addition, the in-house film portal and the brand-new festival app offered exclusive programming that was not available in theaters. As a guest of honor, filmmaker Laura Huertas Millán was present in Vienna with two programs. Live acts included ANTHEA, Daniel Lercher and Monza Blitz.

We’ve come a long long way together

With the trailer of the 19th festival edition, Thelyia Petraki, VIENNA SHORTS winner 2021, showed us children on the beach, with a water ball or ice cream in hand, accompanied by familiar sounds and a grainy image. The trailer made direct reference to our festival focus with analog footage, delving into film history.

The trailer was created with the support of Q21 at MuseumsQuartier.
