16. Vienna Shorts

Courage!

Under the motto COURAGE!, the 16th edition of VIS Vienna Shorts was all about bravery and the will to change. With 300 courageous short films, animations and music videos—to be seen over six days in four Viennese cinemas—we were on the lookout for positive visions for the future as well as social utopias.

The 2019 festival was co-directed by Daniel Ebner and Doris Bauer for the first time. Also new: Selected films were not only entered into the race for the Oscars, but also for the European Film Awards. We had OFF Odense International Film Festival (Denmark) and Motovun Film Festival (Croatia) on our side as partner festivals, while the Spotlight programs were dedicated to three masters of the short form: video artist Bjørn Melhus, documentarian Alex Gerbaulet and shooting star Anna Vasof.

TRAILER

The Astronaut

(Anna Vasof, AT 2019, 01:00 min)

The 2019 trailer was created by the Austrian-Greek filmmaker Anna Vasof, who was also present at the festival with a masterclass, a workshop, a spotlight program at the Austrian Film Museum and a film in competition. In the trailer, standing all alone, in front of a high wall, is an astronaut in a spacesuit. Ready for immediate takeoff, ready to lift off to get over the wall—or far beyond it. After all, the future is made of courage! The fuse is set on fire, and on the sound level the sound of a drop heralds the countdown, as it were. The start is imminent—but the body is inert and only the mind is free.
