Cinema Love & Curiosity: New Festival Animation

Cinema Love & Curiosity: New Festival Animation

The great love of cinema and the simultaneous curiosity for new cinematic forms are inherent in the festival’s basic features. These characteristics now also influence the new festival animation by German artist Robert Seidel and Austrian musician Christof Kurzmann.

The short sequence, which became necessary due to the new graphic design and which will be seen and heard as a kind of “signature tune” before every film program of Vienna Shorts, bows to the classical cinema and the avant-garde as well as to the countless variations of expression and the long history of the short film form.

In the abstract visual sequence by Seidel, who was also responsible for the previous festival animation, complex structures are created by means of geometric folds that spring directly from the heart of the film and create a flickering bridge to analog film projection.

Kurzmann contrasts the avant-garde play of forms on the sound level with a compressed collage of those sound effects that refer to the history of cinema as well as the range of short film art – from great emotions and cat purrs to cigarettes and chickens. The latter just belong to a good film, director Gustav Deutsch once said, who inspired Kurzmann here.

Since it was no easy task to transfer the festival from analog to digital in the shortest possible time, the team is all the happier with the new “signation”. We love the cinema and the collective experience, but are now also looking forward to the adventure in the online universe—this hybrid feeling between cinephilia and curiosity is wonderfully expressed in the sequence.
