13. Vienna Shorts

Fear is not an option

The fear and excessive demands of our time were countered by optimism and hope at the 13th edition of Vienna Independent Shorts—the accompanying call: Fear Is Not An Option. The call was taken up in seven of over 50 programs, among others together with Go Short (NL) and the Festival du nouveau cinéma (CA). A total of 346 short films, animations and music videos were screened over seven festival days.

Spotlights were dedicated to animation legend Bill Plympton and artist Anouk De Clercq, while numerous specials and side events served as informed dialogue and thus also as a counterpoint to the heated formations of a constant crisis.

Behind the scenes: For the first time VIS was the only Academy Award ® Qualifying Festival in the country and sent selected short fiction and short animation films into the race for the most important film awards. What else was important: For the fifth and last time the Night of the Light took place at the festival, for the fourth time the Cat Video Festival attracted almost 2,000 people and VIS was only the second Austrian festival to be accepted into the MEDIA funding program by the EU.

VIS Trailer 2016

(Peter Millard, UK 2016, 01:14 min)

Peter Millard has a flair for the absurd. With his often childlike drawings, the British animator strikes a very special nerve and knows how to surprise with his explosive outbursts of humor and chaos. As artist in residence 2016, he created the official trailer for the festival. And these 74 seconds show exactly what a trailer by Peter Millard should look like: captivating, colorful and a little bit insane.

The trailer was created with the support of Q21 at MuseumsQuartier.
