COMING OF SHORTS: A FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE FOR YOUNG FILM ENTHUSIASTS

“Coming of Age” – this term describes the transition from one phase of life to the next, growing up and finding one’s own place in the world. Inspired by the film genre of the same name, our Coming Of Shorts initiative invites young people to dive into the world of short films and actively engage with the medium of cinema. We offer specially curated film programs for teenagers that are not only entertaining but also thought-provoking. The selected short films are shown in their original version – with German or English subtitles where necessary – providing an authentic insight into diverse cinematic worlds. This includes:

• Age-appropriate film programs that tackle the issues young people care about
• Moderated discussions following the screenings, where you can share your thoughts and questions
• Space for discussion and conversation at our festival centre in the MuseumsQuartier – a perfect opportunity to exchange ideas and discover new perspectives
• Free entry for everyone under 19 throughout the entire festival! Simply show up half an hour before the screening to secure your tickets (no advance booking possible)
• Coming of Shorts Workshop 2026
  Leading up to the festival, we are working with a class from MS Grundäckergasse to explore how short films can shape feelings, opinions, and perceptions, whether in the cinema or on social media. In three modular units (film analysis; accessible film exercises followed by discussion; a visit to the Vienna Shorts Festival 2026), participants will try their hand at production, reception, and critical evaluation, with the aim of strengthening media literacy and critical discourse. This initiative is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education

On 28 May 2026, as part of the festival, two exclusive screenings will take place at Stadtkino Wien specifically for young people:

9:00 am: Screening for teenagers aged approx. 13+
11:00 am: Screening for teenagers aged approx. 15+

Participation is free of charge for young people under 19 and their accompanying persons. Unfortunately, capacity is limited, and reservations are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The short films will be shown in their original version. If the original language is not German, German or English subtitles will be provided.
