We are deeply saddened to share the news that our long-standing colleague and dear friend Hilke Doering passed away on 27 November 2025 after a long illness. Hilke had been one of the key figures at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen since 1995 and one of the pioneers of the European Short Film Network, of which Vienna Shorts is a part.

Hilke played a decisive role in shaping the spirit, integrity, and direction of our European collaboration. Through her work in Oberhausen and her tireless commitment to filmmakers across Europe, she helped lay the foundation for what the ESFN has become today. Her clear vision, sharp mind, and unwavering belief in the value of artistic exchange have accompanied the network since its very beginnings.

We had all hoped she would soon be able to return more fully to the collaborative work she loved so much. Losing her now is a profound shock. Hilke will be deeply missed—as a colleague, as a bridge-builder between festivals, and as a generous and thoughtful advocate for filmmakers everywhere.
