Opening Ceremony Gala

  • , Gartenbaukino 100 min Ticket

We travel the world and the seven seas / everybody is looking for something. For our place in the world (or in the movie theater). For entropy. Or for inspiration, not least because we are willing to question or undo the roles that have been assigned to us. VIS 2019 kicks off with six films and an homage to Agnès Varda, casting a rhythmic, humorous, courageous glance at the world, traveling here and there into the past to better understand the present and make a brighter future. The Astronaut (VIS Trailer 2019)

AT 2019 01 min World premiere Director Anna Vasof

Completely alone, in front of a tall wall, stands the astronaut in a space suit. Ready for liftoff, ready to take off and go over the wall—or far beyond. The future, after all, is forged in courage! The fuse is lit, the sound of a long fall rings in the countdown. Liftoff is imminent—but the body is weary and only the spirit is free. (de)

This Is A Projection

GB 2018 05 min 28 sec Austrian premiere Director Paul Harrison John Wood

Time and space, image and language, analysis and reflection. John Wood and Paul Harrison make do with a slide projector to take the audience along for an equally witty and pointed journey of the mind in 81 frames. This is a projector—and we here in the movie theater are both in the present and in the future. Right? A tantalizing, playful experiment with a retro look, directly addressed to each and every one of us. (de)

CH 2018 10 min Austrian premiere Director Corina Schwingruber Ilić

With climate change, Earth is headed toward its demise but the party is still going strong on the many Titanics around the world: Corina Schwingruber Ilić documents the closed microcosm of a cruise ship, painting an absurd portrait of our commercialized society—while plumes of smoke and exhaust fumes pass on the sea’s horizon. What did David Foster Wallace call his cruise? “A supposedly fun thing I'll never do again.” (de)

Hitting my Head on the World

AT 2019 14 min 53 sec World premiere Director Anna Vasof

Anna Vasof traveled to various places around the world to strap a microphone to her head and record the sounds of her forehead banging against different objects. An original concept, realized with great humor and made all the more vibrant by the many happy accidents the artist incorporates in her final product. The rhythm of the film’s editing also renders it a piece of music—especially when, toward the end, several instruments begin to play along. (tr)

Women Reply

FR 1975 08 min Director Agnès Varda

How does it feel to be a woman? The incomparable Agnès Varda used this question asked by a television channel as an occasion to put her camera on a variety of women and quiz them about beauty ideals, motherhood, and social categorization. Though shot forty-four years ago, Varda’s essay, staged as a series of tableaus and narrated directly into the camera, is as timely, courageous, and inspiring as on the day of its release. (de)

Fuck You

SE 2018 14 min 40 sec Austrian premiere Director Anette Sidor

The story of an escape (from common role ascriptions): Alice and her friends spend a lazy afternoon and steal a sex toy. That she uses it later to effectively irritate her boyfriend and his clique is not only a surprise to her but also a kind of release. Anette Sidor’s festival smash hit is joyfully made in every respect—with a sex-positive attitude and a strong inner desire to question social norms and gender stereotypes. (de)

Black Bus Stop

US 2019 09 min 25 sec Austrian premiere Director Claudrena N. Harold Kevin Jerome Everson

A bus stop in Charlottesville on the University of Virginia campus. Black students are sitting on a bench, a collage of voice-overs reminisces about legendary meetings at the Black Bus Stop—and then, at an advanced hour, the site transforms into a stage for political and personal exchanges, much like it did thirty years ago. Dance and performance, power and courage. A journey through the past to rise up for the future. (de/mm)
