Impossible Shapes And Other Stories Animation Avantgarde 2

  • , Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus 77 min Ticket

In Michael Frei’s Kids all the characters are completely identical, which, translated into the real world, would be a thoroughly menacing scenario. Marta Pajek impressively shows how barely articulated feelings can be translated into striking, emotionally tangible image worlds in episode III of her Impossible Figures. Miloš Tomić’s Musical Traumas resorts to concrete memories and translates them into partly abstract images, while Moïa Jobin-Paré’s Sans Objets oscillates between reality and imagination. The audience is given just enough space to find their own way. (tr)

The Astronaut (VIS Trailer 2019)

AT 2019 01 min World premiere Director Anna Vasof

Completely alone, in front of a tall wall, stands the astronaut in a space suit. Ready for liftoff, ready to take off and go over the wall—or far beyond. The future, after all, is forged in courage! The fuse is lit, the sound of a long fall rings in the countdown. Liftoff is imminent—but the body is weary and only the spirit is free. (de)

Kids

CH 2019 09 min Austrian premiere Director Michael Frei

Michael Frei cites “Crowds and Power” by Elias Canetti as an important source of inspiration for his project Kids, which he created together with Mario von Rickenbach and is also available as a computer game. Against a white background, a simply drawn figure interacts with a crowd of completely identical figures that grow to become a threatening mass and are eventually swallowed up by a big black hole. Musical Traumas

RS 2018 10 min 26 sec Austrian premiere Director Miloš Tomić

Music is often a joy but can just as easily be torture. For instance, when a piano teacher forces her students to balance cups filled with tea on the backs of their hands while practicing. The fear of breaking the cups remains a powerful memory. This and similar recollections of learning an instrument are combined with playful animations that tie in with the narratives like slivers and unfold a universe of abstract associative collages. Sans Objets

CA 2019 06 min 15 sec World premiere Director Moïa Jobin-Paré

Moïa Jobin-Paré works with a blend of film and photography in her films. She often scratches the film stock as a stylistic means; the soundtrack is often composed of original recordings she assembles into an associative sound. In No Objects the structures and figures seem as if carved from a surface; a darkness. It shows hands—hands that draw, collect, form, sort through something. A film like a choreography of light, gestures, and darkness. (wp)

Fallen

AT 2018 03 min Director Klaus Schuster

White palm trees, porch swings, folding lounge chairs, and Duchamp’s Bottle Rack: these are the fittings for a site of artificiality. “Impossible” characters like a 3-d stick figure made of small particles wearing high-heeled shoes or ball-jointed mannequins with clown faces are trapped in an endless, confusing space-time loop; they lounge around, tumble or slide into each other, accompanied by metallic sounds, across the floor. Tesseract

PT 2018 08 min 38 sec Austrian premiere Director Joăo Pedro Oliveira

Tesseract is bookended by a mysterious cube that unfolds and reassembles throughout the film; its faces seeming like molten metal that keeps changing its shape and aggregate state. The audience is floating in the expanse of outer space and is virtually sucked into the action. These futuristic worlds straight out of a sci-fi movie must be enjoyed on the big screen! (wp)

FR 2019 06 min 23 sec Austrian premiere Director Frédéric Doazan

The wind flips open a book sitting unnoticed on the asphalt. The letters in it become unhinged, thus unspooling fascinating moments and stories on the book’s pages. Here fish made of letters swim upstream; new creatures and armies of numbers, symbols and letters take shape, culminating in the formation of a Babel-like tower doomed to collapse. A fascinating animation employing and referencing various techniques. (wp)

PuWu-R 1

RU 2018 01 min 07 sec Director Sasha Svirsky

PuWu-R is a series of one-minute “music videos of nonexistent bands” that have little to do with traditional music videos. Scribbled drawings, faces and figures  flare up in quick-fire cuts and take center stage as they are peppered into the action between abstract sculptures and the occasional photo sequence. The rapid succession of images pulses playfully to the driving beat of the music and still manages to create a well-rounded overall picture. (tr)

Still Lives

FI 2019 06 min 02 sec Austrian premiere Director Elli Vuorinen

Elli Vuorinen is an extraordinary animation artist who has thus far made a name for herself with special puppet animations and cartoons. In Still Lives it is the objects on display in an art history museum that she brings to life in entertaining and thoroughly original ways. Accompanied by a remarkably soothing soundtrack, they contemplate their lonely existence in their glass cages. (tr)

AT 2018 05 min Vienna premiere Director Martin Reinhart Virgil Widrich

Interested readers should consult other sources to learn all about the mechanics of the tx-transform filming technique Martin Reinhart invented in the 1990s. The short film that uses this technique, tx-reverse, provides a unique experience of the self-reflective quality of cinema in its possible roles between representation of reality and transformation into the impossible and dreamlike, when the depiction of a movie theater gets out of joint. Slug Life

GB 2018 06 min 32 sec Austrian premiere Director Sophie Koko Gate

We meet Tanya in her room tinkering away at a formula to create the perfect partner. This time, the experiment yields a giant slug . . . Sophie Koko Gate won’t be tied down in her visual experiments—bursting with colors, oscillating between 2-d and 3-d worlds. While a woman’s sexual autonomy is clearly in the foreground, the film is also teeming with ironic commentary about the generations X and Y. Weird, cool, and wonderful! (wp)
