Oscar® Qualification for “Ugly” and Canadian Films

Nikita Diakur's animation won first prize in the competition and is also qualified for the Oscars® - Two Canadian films on the long list

The cross-competitive "Prizes of the Jury", which qualify their winners for the Oscars®, went to German Animation Ugly and two Canadian productions: the short documentary Voces del Secuestro (Voices of Kidnapping) and the drama Fauve.

Nikita Diakurs 12-minute animation Ugly not only won the first prize in the Animation Avantgarde competition, but also the cross-competition "Prize of the Jury". Also on the long list for the Oscars® - in the short documentary category - was Ryan McKenna's dramatic sound footage work Voces del Secuestro (Voices of Kidnapping). Jeremy Comte won the short feature film category with the children's drama Fauve. Fauve, who already won the Special Jury Award in Sundance in January, has a chance of being nominated for the 2019 Oscar® awards, just like the two other jury prize winners.
