Ernst Schmidt jr. worked as independent filmmaker since 1963 and made numerous short films. He published several writings about avantgarde, experimental and underground cinema. Ernst Schmidt jr. co-founded the Austria Filmmakers Cooperative (1968), the Grazer Autorenversammlung (1973) and the Austrian Directors' Association (1979).
