Maria Lassnig

* 1919 in Kappel am Krappfeld (Kärnten).

Maria Lassnig studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Since 1950 her paintings have been presented in exhibitions worldwide. Together with Arnulf Rainer and Oswald Oberhuber she co-founded informal painting in Austria and founded the art of body painting. From 1961 to 1968, Maria Lassnig lives in Paris, and from 1968 to 1980 in New York. Since she made films, which she created autodidacticly according to her own drawings on a self-invented work desk. From 1980 to 1990, she was professor of the master class for Experimental Design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, where she created the studio for experimental animation film in 1982. Maria Lassnig reveived numerous award, among them the Austrian State Award in 1988.

Lassnig tells us the story of her life in 14 verses, beginning with her birth and ending with her life as it is today. Simultaneusly - in the background - we see the story as animated drawings, full of irony, humor and wisdom. - Together with Hubert Sielecki.

Lassnig, or more precisely her head, drawn with felt-tip pen, sings in English with a heart-rending Austrian accent about her life, her dreams, her eternal search for a male partner: "To look for the better half." But whenever one which is suitable with regard to color and shape appears, he calls her "weak" and "woman" in the same verse. (Maya McKechneay)
