Tributes

The yearly tributes acknowledge artists who helped define the world of short films and who caused a stir more than once. This year the international spotlight is on the British duo Semiconductor (Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt) who, in their fascinating works, seek to answer the question of what it is that holds together the world at its core. The national tribute is dedicated to comic artist Nicolas Mahler, who combines his animated oeuvre with inspiring highlights from the history of animated films.

As a comic artist Nicolas Mahler has acquired world renown, as well as an admiring host of fans, with his minimalist style and absurd humour. When transforming static images into (sparingly) animated ones, Mahler always stays true to his reduced style. For several years now he has not only been a regular at comic salons, but also at short and animated film festivals. VIS invited the Viennese artist to present all 35 minutes of his own animated work, along with inspiring films from respected colleagues.
