Opening

Thursday, 26 May 2011, 8 p.m., Gartenbaukino
Getting hold of high-quality short film productions on 35 mm to show at the VIS Opening in Vienna’s most beautiful premiere cinema is becoming more difficult from year to year. Despite the progressive digitalisation we will once more show outstanding “prize winners, precious gems and premieres” on the big screen. This year’s artists in residence, Max Hattler and Noriko Okaku, will provide audio-visual and “danceable” delights after the film programme.

European Film Award Nominees - Short Matters 1

Friday, 27 May 2011, 2.30 p.m., Metro Kino
Each year the European Film Academy sends a choice tour programme to selected film festivals: all short films nominated for the European Film Prize. VIS presents the nominees for one of the most important film awards of the continent during the course of two afternoons. The first part of this cineastic marathon leads as from political to domestic complexities, from hopeful dates to death. The diverse content is mirrored in form: among the eight contributions are dramas and comedies, as well as documentaries and animations.

Short Film Drive-In

Friday, 27. May + Saturday, 28 May 2011, 8.30 p.m., Haupthof MuseumsQuartier

Friday, 27 May 2011, 12 p.m., Schikaneder
Traditionally Très chic: once again we present an international selection of weird and wayward films. The epic opening takes us to a world of wannabe language courses, little propaganda films and obscure baking instructions. Add to that break-dance legends, zombies, plenty of trash animation from the far North and a passionate ending. All in all, 18 films from 12 countries battle, dance and belch for the highly coveted “Prix Très Chic” – the audience decides who takes home the trophy.

European Film Awards Nominees - Short Matters 2

Saturday, 28 May 2011, 2.30 p.m., Metro Kino
The second part of the European all-star celebration of films selected by the European Film Academy for presentation at selected film festivals: the 160 minute programme promises a varied afternoon, from animation films to doc-fiction-hybrids. The seven short films nominated for the European Film Prize reflect a broad spectrum of content, from piano lessons to exploitation in Bolivia. The latter is the topic of the unmissable Austrian co-production Talleres Clandestinos.

Foster Film Brunch

Sunday, 29 May 2011, 12 p.m., Festival Base
When discussing possible competition films, emotions often tend to run high. In order to soften the blow of realising that one’s favourite film isn’t going to make it into the final programme, we established the Foster Film Brunch. Along with coffee and breakfast, we serve hair dressing trends and show you what else supermarkets can offer. From an audio-visually abstracted working environment, over silence as an obsession, we finally witness a crime, with plenty of self confidence and “Power!” – from afar, of course.

Pierre Hébert - Performance & Showcase

Monday, 30 May 2011, 9 p.m., Reformed Church
Pierre Hébert is one of the giants of film, often mentioned along with pioneers like Norman McLaren, Len Lye or Stan Brakhage. Hébert, born in Montreal in 1944, however, is almost more famous for his live animation performances that have garnered the longstanding NFB-employee and former director of the Cinémathêque Québecoise worldwide acclaim. Frequently awarded with prizes during his career, Hébert received the prestigious Albert Tessier lifetime achievement award in Quebec in 2004.

Airbed Movies

The VIS institution “Airbed Movies” is bigger than ever. Bedded on airbeds the audience is literally drawn to the ceiling (for this is where the projection takes place) to immerse themselves in the breathtaking world of music videos and other musical-filmic dreams. Here you can expect almost everything that is to be seen between heaven and hell. The best contribution of these 15 films from eight nations will be chosen by the audience and awarded with the “Airbed Movie Award” powered by Hoanzl. - Presented by Der Standard.

Awards Ceremony + Fest of VIS

Wednesday, 1 June 2011, 7.30 p.m., Metro Kino
As the number of prizes trebled last year, we are settling for modest continuity this year: three jury awards in the three main competition categories, one award for the best female director and an award for an up-and-coming young film maker, several audience awards in the competitions and special programmes “Très chic” and “Airbed Movies”. Following the festive awards ceremony at the Metro Kino there will be an exuberant party at the Badeschiff, with an album presentation by Killed by 9V Batteries, among others.
