New Communities
This year’s focus, which will be presented in eight programmes, takes a look at the “new society’s” closely interwoven networks, as the Utopia of “community” is at its peak thanks to the new collaborative possibilities of the Internet. The programme is dedicated to the media of film in social networks, activism in the net, as well as popular satire clips and the most beloved music videos according to a facebook-voting. Thrown into the bargain: SciFi at the Planetarium, highlights from “Animate Projects” at the Metro Kino and two panorama programmes from the Vienna Film Academy.

Activism Regroupment - Video Activism and Counter Publicity
Friday, 27 May 2011, 8.30 p.m., Schikaneder
Short films as back up copies for political activism: this is the starting point for this commented selection. It kicks off with individual authentic finds in which the strength of the message and the brittle poetry of images create an electrifying area of tension. Then it’s over to the “medialised” show-film with the anti factor: entertaining mass agitations and shocking images of a well thought out counter-publicity fight for a lasting change of thinking in the volatile cyber communities. Let’s get involved.

Social Networks - The Revival of a Utopia
Friday, 27 May 2011, 10 p.m., Metro Kino
Social networks have given the internet’s community-utopia new energy. Already during the production stage, film makers gather an audience within social networks and let these have a share in the creative process. Some film projects are collaboratively produced and financed (for instance via Crowdfunding). In Machinimas the underlying technology of computer games is co-opted for filmic experiments. And the first films that take a humorous look at the popularity of social networks have also been made already.

Robot Panic Apocalypse - The Science of (Short) Fiction
Saturday, 28 May 2011, 8.30 p.m., Planetarium
There is hardly a genre in the field of short films that has been celebrated as much and so frequently varied as science fiction. The stylistic bandwidth is enormous, from nifty, brightly polished robot thrillers over dirty fantasies of world destruction to absurd-sarcastic animation experiments almost anything goes – and proves continuously popular with a large community. Taking Blomkamp’s Alive in Joburg and Alvarez’s Panic Attack as its starting point, this programme leads the way into an uncertain future that isn’t only written in the stars at the Planetarium…

Vienna Film Academy - Panorama 1
Sunday, 29 May 2011, 2 p.m., Metro Kino
60 years of Vienna Film Academy – this calls for a celebration! We are very happy to present an extensive show by the Vienna Film Academy at VIS for the first time. The programme will be made up of the latest films from the production year 2010. The fact that the programme was curated by students of the Academy allows for certain liberties – for example, the films needn’t necessarily be shorter than 30 minutes. Among others, the 41-minute film Papa, which was awarded the prize for the best short feature film at the Diagonale 2011, will be shown.

Vienna Film Academy – Panorama 2
Sunday, 29 May 2011, 4 p.m., Metro Kino
60 years of Vienna Film Academy – the celebrations go on! A lot can happen in a year at the Film Academy, numerous films were completed, new projects begun. And because in this case one panorama simply isn’t enough, there is a second one. The Film Academy Panorama 2 comprises six recent short films from 2010 that address epiphenomenons of our time. Networking is simply a central topic. What are the consequences of wantonness, stress, loneliness, boredom? The sometimes very young protagonists give answers to these questions.

Satyre und Parodey 2.0 - Remix, mash up and acumen in the net
Sunday, 29 May 2011, 7 p.m., Schikaneder
This compendium of satiric and parodistic contributions from the net came into being after a copious amount of research – not least due to the vast oversupply of clips one is confronted with on YouTube and Co. Finally, however, almost all contributions could be sorted into five categories (from internet series to parodies of commercials), giving the concept a reasonable structure. The final result is nowhere near as dry as it may sound in theory, but probably one of the most amusing programmes of the festival.

VIS Music Video Winners
Sunday, 29 May 2011, 9 p.m., Schikaneder
Music TV is dead – but the good news is: the music video didn’t go down with it! In the web 2.0 it is more alive than ever before; a fact that we were once again made hyperaware of. At the end of our 2-week music video voting in March, we were faced with a long list of fabulous videos. We have put together a programme from the most popular postings that will now to be seen on the big screen. The conclusion: experiment successful – long live the music video! Presented by TBA.

Animate Projects - Marking Time
Monday, 30 May 2011, 10 p.m., Metro Kino
Animate Projects are known in the UK as important pioneers and networkers, as well as “enablers” of experimental (animation) film projects. That this doesn’t save you from financial cuts from the British Arts Council was painfully felt by the “online exhibition space” at the beginning of the year. One by one, renowned artists like Phil Mulloy, Paul Bush or Stephen Irwin threw their weight behind the platform, which also acts as producer together with Channel 4. In Vienna, Animate Projects will present their highlights from the past 15 years.

Around the World in 4 Festivals is an experiment which we try out for the first time. Partner festivals are offered the opportunity to present themselves, their festival or institution on our website. Short films from their past programmes complete the project. It was important for our collaboration partners to choose directors or films who are part of online communities or work with them.
