Thursday, May 27th, 2010, 8 p.m., Gartenbaukino
In this year’s festival opening, VIS will entertain its audience with current award winning movies and great premieres. The Oscar winning French animation Logorama will chase over the big screen, while Händelse vid bank (Incident by a bank) and Believe – the winners of the Golden Bear (Berlin) and the Golden Leopard (Locarno) – will receive their first Austrian screening. Two frequently awarded classics and a German-Austrian world premiere complete the kick-off performance. Following the screenings, the electronic-duo Kilo and Bljak will take up residence in the cinema foyer alias philiale.

Films, which were either much loved or discussed by us but didn’t make it into the final festival programme - this is a selection of “saved” films, whereby each member of the festival’s organisational team has taken on the role of “foster parent” for their favourite film, which they will introduce personally. Enjoy these films while you tuck into some breakfast!

Short Matters! is the programme of short films presented by the European Film Academy that shows all short films nominated for the European Filmprize 2009 at numerous renowned film festivals in Europe. The 13 short films are representative for state of the art, prize worthy European short films.

A lot of music awaits the audience of the Airbed Movies, but the dancing must wait ‘til later. For the screen changes its position from a vertical to a horizontal one, the films are projected perpendicularly upwards – and the programme of (for the most part animated) music videos may be savoured from a reclining position.

Benny Nemerofsky Ramsay followed the invitation of VIS to be this year’s artist in residence of quartier21/MQ. The festival invited Nemerofsky Ramsay to put together a programme of short films, combining his own work, where his development as a video artist comes to the fore, with films by filmmakers who inspired him.

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010, 7.30 p.m., Metro Kino
The prize winners of the three main competitions and the audience and special award winners will be revealed on the festival’s final night at the Metro Kino. A selection of prize-winning films will be shown again on the big screen.

FORUM + PANEL DISCUSSION + LECTURE
Sunday, May 30th, 2010, 8.30 p.m. (9 p.m.), Badeschiff
In 2010 on board of the Bathing Ship, VIS will try out a new concept of a casual yet structured industry forum that is meant to be an antidote to dry speed-dating or a standing reception for those accredited. Short film institutions, international festivals, renowned educational institutions and innovative independent film initiatives have 15 minutes to present themselves with short films and a short kick-off discussion in front of the big screen.

One of the central concerns of the newly installed competition section Animation Avantgarde is to create a reservoir for innovative production from the most diverse areas in order to enable and boost mutual inspiration and influence. This stance, apart from answering the cries for reform with regard to the Austrian situation, is meant to be perceived as a master plan for the exclusive presentation of animation at the international animation film festivals. The panel discussion with Thomas Renoldner (curator of Animation Avantgarde) and further guests will critically examine this positioning and substantiate many a legitimate demand.

The book “Die Kunst des Einzelbilds – Animation in Österreich von 1832 bis heute“ published in January 2010 by ASIFA Austria and the Filmarchiv Austria, assembles numerous essays on various topics by renowned authors. In his lecture Thomas Renoldner will concentrate on his own essays, relay the most important basic ideas, convey background information and present and review a number of film examples, while cordially inviting you to an animated discussion. FILM EDUCATION
Monday, May 31st, 2010, 5 p.m., Metro Kino
The Austrian director Eva Hausberger created a short film with final year pupils of the Vienna Goethe-Gymnasium about the topic of exclusion. This project, realised in cooperation with KulturKontakt Austria, will celebrate its cinema premiere at VIS 2010.

ACCOMPANYING EXHIBITIONS

May 5th - June 2nd, 2010, Asifakeil
As examples for the programme Animation Avantgarde we will be showing the films Lucía and Luis from the series “Lucía, Luis y el lobo” by Chilean artists Niles Atallah, Joaquin Cociña und Cristóbal León. Recorded in single frames; material: charcoal, dirt, flowers, found objects and cardboard.
