PRIZE WINNERS & PREMIERES
Four excellent short films from the past months and years that haven’t yet found their way to Austria, as well as a premiere make up the programme of the opening of VIS Vienna Independent Shorts at the Gartenbaukino. Thomas Draschan starts us off with “Freude” and Johanna Moder concludes the programme with the first presentation of her music video to “Buffalo People” by Graz band The Base. And in between, three international prize winners induce short-film-fever. The screening will be followed by a party with DJs and VJs of Mon Ami in the foyer (philiale).
Freude (Delight)

Austria 2009, 5 min, language: without dialogue
director, screenplay, production: Thomas Draschan
Decaying, festering, decomposing, weathering: Thomas Draschans latest work, which premiered in Rotterdam, is a visual feast, a popular-cultural tempest of images, a masterwork exploding on the screen. This is pure film – in form, rhythm and montage. - AUSTRIAN PREMIERE.
Polar

Germany/Switzerland 2008, 29 min, language: German, subtitles: English
director: Michael Koch | screenplay: Michael Koch, Juliane Großheim | production: Kinomaton, Dschoint Ventschr, Kunsthochschule für Medien/Köln | cast: Max Brauer, André Hennicke, Maria Kwiatkowsky
This intensive father-son story is subtly surrounded by a hint of escalation in the misty Swiss mountain air. Michael Koch proves his splendid talent for narration, which has already delighted audiences in Winterthur and at the Berlinale. - AUSTRIAN PREMIERE.
Le Mozart des pickpockets (Der Mozart der Taschendiebe)

France 2006, 30 min, language: French, subtitles: English
director, screenplay: Philippe Pollet-Villard | production: Antoine Gandaubert, Fabrice Goldstein, Antoine Rein | cast: Matteo Razzouki-Safardi, Philippe Pollet-Villard, Richard Morgiève
Two pickpockets who don’t get it easy in life are at the centre of attention in this light comedy full of dry humour and quick cuts. With this 2008 Oscar-winner, Philippe Pollet-Villard created one of the most successful short films of the last years. - AUSTRIAN PREMIERE.
Lögner (Lies)

Sweden 2008, 13 min
director, screenplay, editor: Jonas Odell | production: Linda Hambäck | photography: Per Helin | cast: Lisa Norström, Rebecca Holmbert, Yasmin Rahmani, Sven Segelsson, Tommy Hansson, Christer Fredriksson
In three episodes, Jonas Odell sketches a spectrum ranging from small and big lies, unpleasant truths and their consequences. Varying between rotoscoping, stop motion and classic CGI technique, the Swedish filmmaker created an outstanding animation-documentary which received the award for the best short film at the 2009 Sundance Festival. - AUSTRIAN PREMIERE.
Buffalo People

Austria 2009, 4 min, language: English
director: Johanna Moder | concept: Johanna Moder, Karin Hammer, Heike Barnard | editor: Karin Hammer | music: The Base
A perfectly timed photo film, an impressive mood description and an atmospheric sequence of images: Johanna Moder takes to grey fields and snowy roads and looks right into the faces of the "Buffalo People". A beautiful music video for Graz band "The Base". - WORLD PREMIERE.
