History of the festival
2011
VIS Vienna Independent Shorts 2011 was held from May 26th to June 1st. The number of film submissions reached nearly 2,500. Several special programmes were dedicated to the subject of "New Communities".

2010
The international short film festival was held for the seventh time from May 27 to June 2 – for the first time with three separate competitions, as well as a new main venue in the Metro Kino. The main focus in 2010 was the complex of themes revolving around film – dance – rhythm.

2009
For the first time more than 1.000 short films were submitted (see submission statistics). The sixth edition of VIS Vienna Independent Shorts was held from May 14th to May 20th, 2009. Special programmes commemorated the years 1939 und 1989 and focussed on Russia and the United States.

2008
VIS Vienna Independent Shorts celebrated its fifth birthday gracefully from May 16th to 23rd, 2008 in seven locations, among them the Gartenbaukino which served as big opening location for the world premiere of the football short film reel Eleven Minutes. The tributes were dedicated to Hubert Sielecki and Chantal Akerman. The main focus of the special programmes was on Switzerland and football.

2007
The fourth edition of VIS Vienna Independent Short was held from May 15th to 20th, 2007. 717 shorts from 51 countries were submitted, 230 were shown. In addition to the international competition a Panorama section with exclusively Austrian short films was held. The tributes were dedicated to Virgil Widrich and Miranda July. Part of the specials were for example a lie down cinema and the Ars Electronica Late Night. The main award was the Vienna Short Film Award - for the first time renumerated with 2.000 euros by the City of Vienna.

2006
For the third time VIS Vienna Independent Shorts was held from May 21st to May 28th, 2006. Beside locations in Vienna parallel events took place in Dornbirn, Graz and Innsbruck. 685 films from 52 countries were submitted. Highlights were a tribute to Austrian film-maker Mara Mattuschka, the Vienna premiere of The Mozart-Minute and a Focus on the Balkans. There were several film awards.

2005
The organizers of the first festival edition united to the Independent Cinema Association. The second Vienna Independent Shorts was held from May 22nd to May 28th, 2005. With an audience award an international competition was established.

2004
VIS Vienna Independent Shorts resulted from the merger of several student initiatives, which had already organized short film events in Vienna in the previous years. The first festival edition was held from June 6th to June 12th in 2004. While the opening and the closing night were organized together, the organization of the five days in between was incumbent on the respective initiatives separately.
